Div 1 (Old)

Hamilton scorers: J. Miller 46, Christie, Miller

30/10/1915 | KO:

Hamilton Academicals only got their winning goals in the last quarter of an hour at Pittodrie, Aberdeen, but after the first twenty minutes of play they showed a superiority in real football, and the draw which Aberdeen looked like effecting by means of a penalty goal would barely have done justice to the Ducal side. Aberdeen made a promising start, doing the most of the pressing for the first half hour, but their forwards were without a leader, Sloan (a soldier and ex-Bolton Wanderer) being scarcely seen, and there was little method about their movements. Hamilton were the more skilful side all over, particularly forward, where they combined delightfully, and beat the Aberdeen defence time and again. Miller, their centre, scored two of their three goals. Aberdeen's point came from a penalty, taken by J. Wyllie. Six thousand spectators saw the game.

Aberdeen lost two points to a better team than themselves on Saturday, when Hamilton Academicals defeated them by three goals to one. Clever forward play - well-conceived with accurate close passing - gave the visiting team the victory. The weather was ideal, and the crowd numbered between 6000 and 7000.

In the opening stages, Aberdeen made the pace, and many dangerous crosses gave the Hamilton defenders anxiety. After 20 minutes, Hamilton took up the pressure, and Colman and Hume had their time of anxiety, while Greig had to exercise his agility in clearing. The bustling tactics of the Aberdeen defence left Hamilton few shooting opportunities. McNamee tried a long one, which Greig smartly saved. Three corners in quick succession indicated the severity of the pressure on the Aberdeen defence, which at this point were severely taxed. A rousing rally by Aberdeen caused Miller to kick over, and from the corner Ross saved.

FOUR GOALS SCORED

Within a minute, as the result of clever forward play, Hamilton scored, J. Miller with a straight drive beating Greig. Hamilton were masters for a time, but gradually Aberdeen wore them down only to fail at close quarters. John Wyllie's head cleared from a corner. Sloan got clear away, torched to the left and tried a long oblique shot, which Ross held and dropped, only to recover and clear before he could be knocked off. Aberdeen got the equaliser from a penalty, kicked by John Wyllie. Surprise upon surprise. Within a minute Christie gave Hamilton the lead from at close range, with Gregg, who threw himself at the ball but failed to get it away, at full length on the ground. It now looked as if Hamilton would score when they cared to try, and 5 minutes from time, Miller, their centre, made siccar by beating Greig.
