league cup

The Scottish League Cup, in its many guises, has given Aberdeen some magnificent moments throughout its history.

The Club's first success in the competion would come in 1956, when a 2-1 semi final victory over Rangers would set up a final against St Mirren. It was to be the same scoreline here, and the Dons would lift the trophy thanks to the winning goal from Graham Leggat.

Twenty years would pass before another final was reached, and it was Rangers who were once again vanquished in the semi final, Jocky Scott's hat-trick leading the way as the Ibrox men were demolished by 5-1. Celtic were waiting in the final and were making their 13th successive League Cup Final appearance but it was to prove unlucky 13 for the Parkhead outfit as Drew Jarvie and Davie Robb gave another 2-1 win.

Despite collecting almost every trophy placed in front of him, it was the League Cup which would elude Alex Ferguson, but 1985 would see the Dons finally claim the trophy under Fergie. Hibs were overpowered by three to nil in what would become known as the 12 minute final.

The 1980s would end with a trio of classic Skol Cup Finals against Rangers, but it would take until the third of these until the Dons would become victors, a double from Paul Mason taking the trophy north once again.

Then 1995, after another semi-final victory over Rangers, would see First Division Dundee brushed aside 2-0 - thanks to goals from Billy Dodds and Duncan Shearer - as the Dons claimed what was then known as the Coca-Cola Cup.

It took another 19 years for the Dons to return to League Cup success, when under the management of Derek McInnes, the team dismissed Alloa Athletic, Falkirk, Motherwell and St Johnstone to reach the final match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The final may be unique if the club's history thanks to the opposition not needing a large allocation of tickets for the match at Parkhead. Over 40,000 Aberdeen supporters turned the venue into ParkRed and generated a completely Aberdonian atmosphere in backing the Dons through a hard fought but goalless match where, after extra time there was a dramatic penalty shootout in which every Dons scored his shot while Jamie Langfield saved Inverness' first effort. The Cup was on its way home to Aberdeen. 19 years, 120 minutes and then f*****g penalties!
