Dunfermline 1 - 6 Aberdeen

The second team paved the way for a high-scoring double over Dunfermline when they won the Premier Reserve League game, brought forward from Saturday to Thursday to help both clubs use the match as preparation for the major fixture. Dunfermline, in fact, played four of the players who were to appear in the first team while Dons were able to give necessary match practice to Keith Edwards.
Aberdeen won the game 6-1 and if all the many chances created had been put safely into the net it would have been a double-figure victory. 'We were happy to settle for six goals from a very good display' said coach Teddy Scott, 'but it could very easily have been more. 'It was not a particularly young or inexperienced team that Dunfermline fielded so we were very pleased with the outcome though it is a fact that we had a very strong team out ourselves.'
Strangely in the light of the final scoreline it was only 1-1 at half-time when a defensive error allowed the visitors to equalise a cracking 30 yarder from Paul Wright who looks to be getting his old scoring form and sharpness back after a slightly off-form spell.
The lead arrived early in the second-half when Brian Irvine, who constantly gets his name on the scoresheet either at home or away in either first team or second, knocked in a Peter Weir comer. Edwards, revealing the finishing knack for which Ian Porterfield recruited him from Leeds, made it 3-1 from close in and by now Dons had firmly taken control with some sound approach work.
Wright struck again when Gary Hackett fed him with a through ball and then the former Shrewsbury Town player added the fifth himself after a neat one-two passing move with Edwards.Finally Stevie Gray added number six a few minutes before the end to round off a display which suggested that the second team are on course to retain the Championship while providing the necessary platform for feeding individuals into the senior side.
New comers Edwards and Hackett both proved their worth to the club in this game. Although Hackett has not yet had the opportunity to give a one hundred percent display in the senior side he has left officials in no doubt that he has fine natural skill and the overall potential to do extremely well with the club. The challenge for places is back to its former intensity and promises to keep the whole playing staff on their toes.
