Orion 4 - 1 Rovers

Charity Cup Semi Final
Orion scorers: Gloag, Fyfe, Borthwick, ?
Rovers scorers: Gorman

27/04/1889 | KO:

In this tie the Rovers kicked off, and for several minutes the game was very fast, so much so that it was made plainly evident to the spectators that the speed of both teams, especially of the forwards, would soon tire them out. The Orion, who apparently were not in such good favour with the onlookers as the Rovers, were the first to break the ice. Gloag had a splendid run from the lower end of the field, and made a well-judged pass to Borthwick, who shot well for goal, but the Rovers' goalkeeper was equal to the occasion, and saved. Immediately thereafter the ball was again in front of the Rovers' posts, and Fyfe had a good shot, the ball being collared by the goalkeeper. Gloag, however, rushed him through, and recorded the first point in the Orion's favour. The Orion for several minutes afterwards made it pretty warm for their opponents, but the latter succeeded in getting the ball clear, and, running it well up the field, Gorman equalised. A corner a few minutes later fell to the Orion, but they failed to make anything of it, or of a foul which was given them right in front of the Rovers' posts. During the final quarter of an hour?s play in the second half the play was very equal and it looked as if the match would result in a draw. Later on, however, the Rovers, who appeared to have exhausted their energies, allowed an opening to Fyfe, who put in a neat goal. Borthwick in a few minutes added a third goal to the Orion. The Rovers appeared to have lost heart, and the Orion, taking full advantage, obtained a fourth goal. The game was after this entirely in the hands of the Orion. Fyfe again scored, but the goal was disallowed. The match resulted in a win for the Orion by 4 goals to 1 goal.
