UCD Taught Footballing Lesson by Dons

The Dons taught the players of University College Dublin a lesson as they eased to a win on the first game of their tour this evening.

Derek McInnes' new look Dons side proved to be far too strong for the Irish top flight side and looked impressive as goals from Josh Magennis, Jonny Hayes, Niall McGinn and sub Peter Pawlett saw them stroll to success.

It could and should have been more as the Dons dominated with midfield duo Barry Robson and Willo Flood both impressing and dictating play.

Aberdeen took just five minutes to take the lead when Josh Magennis powerfully headed in a Niall McGinn cross.

Magennis, Hayes, Barry Robson, Joe Shaughnessy and Clark Robertson all went close in the first half as the Dons dominated against their Irish opponents.

UCD keeper Ger Barron had a fine game and was single-handedly keeping the score down with a string of top saves.

Derek McInnes' side doubled their advantage in the 35th minute when Hayes rounded the keeper and easily scored after Robson's long diagonal pass and a slight mix up at the back.

Then 30 seconds into the second half Niall McGinn cracked in a superb third with a brilliant volley after Hayes blocked shot fell perfectly for him.

McInnes made a host of changes with 20 minutes left with run-outs for Chris Clark, Peter Pawlett, Scott Vernon and Gregg Wylde.

Substitute Vernon was thwarted late on at the UCD Bowl by a fine save by UCD sub keeper Liam Traynor.

And Pawlett, who looked lively when he came on, ended the scoring after slotting home with three minutes to go. Vernon had done well to hold the ball up pass to the winger.

If the Dons had doubled their goal tally last night, it wouldn't have flattered them as they dominated most of the game and created numerous chances. very encouraging signs.

New keeper signing Nicky Weaver was on the bench and looks set to make his debut on Thursday night against Malahide United. Calvin Zola again missed the game tonight but it is hopeful he might be available for a place on the bench on Thursday and will hopefully play on Saturday.

The manager after the game told RedWeb :

"I was very pleased with that. It was a good night's work. We managed to get through the game again without any injuries, we had another clean sheet and again our forward players got in amongst the goals again.

"We dominated possession. Although we were up against a young side they are half way through their season and their fitness was very good so it was certainly a test from that point of view.

"There was a lot of energy in the UCD team. We had to match that before we could start playing. That was the most pleasing thing. I know we can play well, I know we can pass well, I know we can score goals but our energy levels were very prominent tonight and that was pleased especially with the humidity.

"We managed to get seven boys 90 minutes under their belts and we managed to get four boys 75 minutes, that was always the intention.

"All in all a good night for us. It was a good work out on a good surface."
