Aberdeen 1 - 1 Heart of Midlothian

Aberdeen rounded off the 2012-13 season with a 1-1 draw against Hearts in an entertaining encounter. The home side dominated the game but found themselves behind when Stevenson headed in from a corner on 61' but they got back into the game thanks to an own goal from Jamie Hamill on 77' minutes. Despite pressing for a winner the Dons were unable to find it but remain unbeaten since Derek McInnes took over in April.

Aberdeen started well and a poor header from Andy Website allowed Magennis to pick up and prod the ball past Jamie McDonald but Dylan McGowan got back to avert the danger. Niall McGinn, who signed a new 2 year contract with the club the day before this game, was next to try his luck but his shot went over the bar.

The conditions were atrocious for this game with spells of heavy rain throughout and Magennis tried a low powerful drive on 12 minutes which tested McDonald as it bobbled on the greasy surface. Seconds later the Dons were on the attack again and a good cross from Shaughnessy found Cammy Smith but his header went just over the bar. The home side kept up the pressure and Andy Webster was forced to make a timely tackle on Johnny Hayes when it looked like he was through on goal.

Attacking play from Hearts was virtually non- existent but Jamie Langfield did have to palm away an effort from Jason Holt for a corner.

At the other end the Dons should have taken the lead when Smith found Hayes who in turn fed McGinn. The Northern Ireland International launched a fantastic goal bound shot but Jamie McDonald pulled off a fantastic save to deny him.

On 20 minutes the Dons created another couple of chances when Hayes unleashed an effort which McDonald palmed away. From the rebound Smith saw his effort also diverted away by McDonald for a corner.

Aberdeen continued to see a lot of the ball and on 34 minutes, Josh Magennis beat the offside trap and ran in behind the Hearts defence to the by-line before cleverly lofting the ball towards the back post. However there was no one there for the Dons and Hearts cleared.

5 minutes later they should have scored yet again. Great play set Magennis up to have a go but again McDonald saved the Tynecastle side to deny Aberdeen the half time lead.

Despite their domination throughout the game, the Dons found themselves behind just after the hour mark. Hearts won a corner which David Smith floated into the box for Ryan Stevenson to head home from 8 yards out. A harsh blow to the home side but Derek McInnes responded by immediately withdrawing Cammy Smith for U20 top scorer, Declan McManus.

And they responded well to the setback of going a goal behind and remained on the front foot creating a few half chances including a Jonny Hayes effort which went just over.

McInnes then made a second change which saw Scott Vernon replace Magennis up front but it was the first sub, McManus who had the Dons next opportunity. Good play from Hayes down the right saw him cross to the youngster and he rose well but headed just over the bar. It wouldn't be long though before the majority of the 10,456 crowd were celebrating though.

Another excellent cross from Hayes into a dangerous area saw Jamie Hamill send the ball into his own net to get the Dons deservedly level on 77' minutes. It was no more than they deserved.

The Dons made a third change which saw the departing Gavin Rae given a standing ovation by the Red Army as he was replaced by Jamie Masson, another graduate of Neil Cooper's U20 side. And the side continued to press for a winner to finish the season off in style but couldn't find it. McGinn went close with a powerful effort as did Hayes but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
