Montrose 1 - 0 Aberdeen

By one goal to nil Montrose overcame the Aberdeen Reserves at Links Park Saturday. The game was throughout contested keenly. In the first half Montrose displayed the better form, and it was this period that a lovely cross J. Hogg, the homesters' young outside left, beat Sutherland all the way. The visitors showed some remarkably fine touches in their play, and were better served on the right wing in the half, whereas the left wing provided the danger for the gable-enders in the second period, and Yule, Stephen, and Fisher were ever prominent, just as Grant and Wilson were in the first. Fisher on two occasions had exceptionally hard luck in the second half, and Yule, with a daisy of a cross, sent the hall skimming past the upright. Sutherland had more to do in goal than Jack, and not infrequently the backs passed to him to clear, so persistent were the Montrosians in their attacks. The custodian was sound, and not infrequently was scooping out and glancing side shots which would have made quite creditable goals. Hannah was powerful in defence; McCombie, Lees, and Watt worked effectively; and on the afternoon's play little preference could given in a van which moved sweetly but failed at the critical juncture, and but for the magnificent saving of Jack Fisher would not have been denied the credit of at least the equaliser, if not the winning point; but then again Gibson, the Montrose centre forward, experienced as hard luck as the Aberdonian when he saw Sutherland pouncing upon a shot which he headed down off a corner kick, and again when the custodian picked the hall from his feet within a yard of goal. The home hacks were a tower of strength, the halves worked strenuously and to good purpose, and in the front line "Billy" Hogg, outside right, and his brother, J. Hogg, on the left, were conspicuous, as was also Johnnie Edgar, the ex-Aberdonian, who seemed to shine - as he invariably does - against his former club. Gibson, centre forward, and Jackson, inside right, were quite good, but were certainly not upon top form. By their success Montrose have four successive victories to their credit, having vanquished Dundee A by 1?0, Arbroath Amateurs 4?2, Brechin City 2?0.
