Victory For Aberdeen A
Aberdeen Reserves managed to get a couple of valuable Scottish Alliance points at the expense of Queen's Park Strollers.
The opening stage of the game did not look too promising for the home team when Lawrie had to admit defeat from Gardiner. The reverse infused more snap into the homesters' methods. F. P. W. Alexander in particular gave his colleagues a splendid lead by aggressive work on the wing. Connon had the honour of scoring the equaliser with the best-taken goal of the match. Before half-time Watt, meeting a nicely-placed ball with his head from a corner-kick by Alexander, placed the leather past the Strollers' custodian. The play up to the interval was keen and interesting in view of the heavy nature of the ground.
The Strollers in the second half were the nipper side, and weakness in front of the Aberdeen goal deprived them of at least a point. The nearest effort to securing the equaliser came from Fyfe, who made good use of an excellent cross by Renwick with a header which went narrowly past the upright. The speed and aggressiveness of Grove and Renwick, the Hampden club's wingers, was a marked feature of the second half play, and only a resolute defence prevented their forwards from doing damage. Both teams did not spare themselves, and consequently the trainers were kept busy attending to minor injuries.
The home defence, although rather shaky at the outset, can claim more than reasonable credit for victory. Lawrie was often tested, and showed fine anticipation throughout. Smith was a shade ahead of his partner in tackling, while McBoyle put in a lot of hard and useful work. In the middle division there was no player of outstanding merit. On his first half display no forward the field excelled F. P. W Alexander in clean tackling or sped, but he did not repeat the same effectiveness later on. Moir seemed to have struck a bad patch, while Fisher and Connon did several clever things. Grant was the most thrustful player in the vanguard.
The visitors' honours fell to Renwick, Fyfe and Grove in the attack, with W. Gardiner their prominent half-back. Under pressure the Strollers' defence was often sorely tried, and only Niven inspired confidence.
