And Keep Inter-City Cup

A WHIRLWIND start which produced two goals in the first twelve minutes enabled Dundee to retain the inter-city trophy at Aberdeen's expense at Dens Park yesterday.

The score of 4-1 in the Dundonians' favouvour - the final aggregate was 4-2 - was no more than they deserved.
Aberdeen failed completely to reproduce the form showed against St Mirren at Paisley on Saturday.
Defensive weakness in the first' half was exploited by the alert Dens Park attack, and after starting with a lead of one goal the Dons found themselves two hehind at the interval.
A half-time change which put Harris to inside left and Kelly in the middle caused some trouble to the Dundee defence, and after Kelly scored there was a spell when the Dens Park defence was in trouble. The Dons could not sustain the effort, however and Dundee finished good winners.
The big difference between the teams was at wing back. Gallagher and Boyd could find time to bring the ball under control and part to advantage whereas Stenhouse and McLaughlin were always labouring.
Hamilton has still to find his touch at inside forward and on yesterday's display he did not compare favourably with Pattillo, the former Pittodrie player, who was outstanding in Dundee's early advances.

Johnstone at Fault

The Dons' defence did not reveal the poise shown against St Mirren. Both Massie and McKenna were too easily beaten by the extreme wingers, and it looked as if Johnstone might have saved Pattillo's second goal.
After a shaky start, Thomson finished on top in the duel between two last-season Aberdeen junior, but Gerrie gave him plenty to think about. None of the Aberdeen forwards was particularly outstanding, although Kelly came more into the game when he took over at centre in the second half.
Botha, with limited opportunities, looked as dangerous as Pearson, and was unfortunate in the first half when Follon hooked his try over the bar with the goalkeeper well beaten.
The game had scarcely begun when Pattillo put Dundee ahead. He cut through on his own when the Aberdeen defence expected him to pass to Gerrie, and his low shot had Johnstone beaten.
Nine minutes later Gerrie put Andrews away, and although the winger's shot-cum-cross looked harmless, Gunn cut in to shoot well away from Johnstone. In the thirty-first minute Pattillo made it three. The inside right was lying unmarked after the ball had been headed clear from a corner on the left.

Kelly's Goal

With Kelly in the middle, Aberdeen showed more enterprise after the interval, but it wasn't until the thirty-first minute that the former Hearts player took a pass from Pearson and hit a fierce left-foot shot which Brown touched but failed to hold.
For a brief spell after this Aberdeen looked like making a game of it, but Hamilton twice missed scoring chances, and four minutes from the end Andrews cleverly tricked Massie and chipped the ball back to Gerrie, who scored from close in.
