Dons in five goal romp at Elgin

Aberdeen beat Elgin City 5-0 in their final warm up match before heading to South Africa. Two strikes from Richie Byrne and goals from Clark, Maguire and Mackie gave the reds a comfortable win. French Trialist Othmane Hamama and new signing Derek Soutar were both handed starts in a team that showed nine changes from the eleven who started against Peterhead on Thursday evening. Dons fans made up two thirds of the 1,453 crowd.

The Dons started with French trialist Othmane Hamama playing at left back and Richie Byrne moving into the left side of midfield. Aberdeen carved out the first chance of the game in the 8th minute when Lovell latched on to a Foster cross, but the Elgin keeper did enough to keep the ball out. A minute later Lovell was involved again when Foster collected his delightful flick but was unable to capitalise. Lovell then wasted another opportunity with a weak finish in the 10th minute.

Lovell went close again in the 16th minute when he beat his man and went one-on-one with the keeper before being denied by a timely challenge as he was set to shoot. The home side then almost grabbed a sensational lead a minute later when Campbell beat Hamama and culled a shot beyond Soutar and on to the far post for a lucky escape. The Dons heeded the warning and took the lead in the 20th minute after Foster was upended outside the box.

A well worked free kick involving Clark and Winter was rolled to Byrne and the left sided player drilled the ball into the net from the edge of the box. A minute later Clark had a decent run and shot that was well held before Winter fired a free kick wide in the 25th minute. Elgin carved out another opportunity a minute later when good play from Nelson set up Johnstone but his lob went wide of the target. Dickson then headed over in both the 28th and 34th minute before Aberdeen extended their lead two minutes later.

The second goal came from another set play after Dickson made a bad challenge on Lovell, which earned the Elgin captain a yellow card. From the resultant free kick Winter rolled the ball to Clark who blasted it to the top right hand corner of the net. Aberdeen could have added a third a minute before the broke when Mackie chested a Hamama cross into the path of Winter. Unfortunately the midfielder's shot was deflected inches over the bar.

Aberdeen started the second half strongly and in the opening minute Foster went clear on the right and fired over a deep cross that was turned back across the face of the goal by Byrne just out of reach of Lovell. Both Mackie and Donald then just failed to find Lovell with crosses as the Dons looked for a killer third goal. In between these attacks Byrne was booked for a robust challenge but he popped up again in the 62nd minute when his fierce shot was deflected over the bar.

The converted midfielder was not to be denied however and he scored a superb second goal a minute later when he met Foster's corner at the near post and steered the ball into the roof of the net. After a series of substitutions the Dons finished strongly and Maguire scored a superb solo effort in the 74th minute with a penetrating run that ended with a low shot past the keeper. Two minutes later Maguire fired in a great cross but Stewart could only steer his effort over the bar. The scoring was completed in the 84th minute when Byrne released Nicholson and Mackie was given the simple task of rolling the ball into the net from close range.
