Dons Draw Blank

Aberdeen totally dominated tonight?s under 21 match against Dundee. Unfortunately they found Dundee keeper Paul Mathers in outstanding form and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Zerouali shrugged off Saturday?s disappointment with a five star display that had the Moroccan spraying passes all over the pitch. Youngster Scott Michie was forced to hobble off the pitch in the 33rd minute after coming off worse in a challenge.

In a fairly uneventful start, it took a short while for the teams to settle. The Dons created the first opportunity of the match in the 7th minute when Zerouali played a one-two with Michie and found himself in acres of space. He headed towards goal, but the keeper did well to block his shot. The Under 21 team were using the same system of corner kicks that the senior squad adopt and this was causing the visitors real problems. This was reflected in the 9th minute when Solberg headed just wide from a Clark corner. A minute later, a Zerouali pass found Tiernan in good position, but the youngster headed wide.

Aberdeen were totally in control at this stage, creating chance after chance. Michie should have done better in the 13th minute when Zerouali was once again the provider. He set the youngster away on the left, but Michie dallied on the ball as he approached the keeper, allowing Mathers to gather. Two minutes later, Bett made a darting run down the right before passing to Lilley on the overlap. He cut the ball back to Tiernan and the youngster?s shot was well held by Mathers. A minute later Zerouali set up Michie, but his effort was screwed wide.

Thompson of Dundee was booked in the 23rd minute for a bad challenge on Zerouali. From the resultant free kick, a well-rehearsed move found Clark on the left. Mathers held his well-driven shot. Two minutes later the same player was once more on target after a good run on the right by Bett. The ball was worked across to Clark and once more Mathers was on hand to deny the Dons. It took a last minute block by Thompson to deny Michie in the 27th minute and a minute later Mathers did well to turn a Zerouali shot wide.

Michie took a bad knock in the 33rd minute and hobbled off to be replaced by Carella. Bett made a good run into the Dundee penalty area in the 39th minute but there was still no way past Mathers. The half ended as it started, with Aberdeen totally dominating.

Aberdeen once more went hunting for goals in the second half, but it was Dundee that carved out the first real chance. Solberg conceded a free kick on the right of the box and Montgomery went directly for goal. Fortunately Esson was alert and saved the effort on the line. In the 59th minute, good work by Zerouali set up Clark, but Mathers easily saved his 25-yard effort. Zerouali had the ball in the net in the 62nd minute but he had used a hand to control the ball. Match official Mr M. Tumilty decided that the Moroccan?s misdemeanour was worthy of a booking.

Two minutes later Bett chipped the ball over Thomson?s head for Zerouali to collect, but the Moroccan?s shot went inches wide of the post. Aberdeen were completely in control and both Bett and Clark went close. Dundee were limited to the occasional break and in the 71st minute they won a free kick on the edge of the box. Billio curled the effort inches wide of Esson?s right hand post. A minute later Forbes was booked closely followed by Solberg. In between the two cautions, Rutkiewicz hit a real pile driver from 20yards and watched in agony as Mathers not only stopped it, but held on to the ball also.

The 79th minute saw a fine run by Carella on the right, which ended with the youngster hitting a low drive from a tight angle. Somehow Mathers managed to turn the ball away for a corner. Aberdeen were almost caught out by a sucker punch in the 83rd minute. Milne lobbed Esson, but fortunately the ball landed on the roof of the net.
