This was Aberdeen's fourth meeting with Dundee United in season 1961-62, but after an extremely exciting 2-2 draw they were still left without a win in the sequence. United were on a run of seven unbeaten games and had scored five goals on the Dons previous appearance at Tannadice, after 25 minutes it looked as if they were going to repeat that scoreline. By that time the Dons were trailing 0-2 and defending frantically, however a goal on the stroke of half time by Mulhall turned the match around. The second period belonged to the Dons with Ewen's equaliser poor reward for arguably the best 45 minutes Aberdeen had put in since the New Year.
