First half strikes sink Montrose.

Aberdeen's pre-season programme continued in the sunshine at Links Park, Montrose. There was a place in the starting lineup for trialist Omer Riza. Steve Basham had to make do with a place on the bench. It was the home side that were first to show in the 5th minute, but Jamie McAllister cleared the danger. Montrose threatened again in the 9th minute but Gilzean could only shoot over. Aberdeen were coming into the match and Ben Thornley had the Dons' first shot at goal in the 12th minute, but he could only shoot wide.

Aberdeen were slowly getting the upper hand, and took the lead in the 17th minute. Leon Mike touched the ball into the path of Riza who squeezed the ball to Thornley who made no mistake with a low drive. Aberdeen were in charge, but were let off the hook in the 29th minute as an unmarked Gilzean headed well wide. Ben Thornley was involved again in the 31st minute but Roberto Bisconti saw his shot from Thornley's cutback blocked.

Aberdeen could have made it 2-0 n the 32nd minute as Riza and Mike broke clear, but Riza's cutback was behind Leon Mike. Mike would not be denied however, and he was on hand to give the Dons a two-goal cushion in the 34th minute. Chris Clark teased Robertson before putting over a fine cross, giving Mike the easiest of chances. Ross O'Donoghue could have extended the visitors' lead just five minutes later, but he could only shoot weakly at McGlynn.

Steve Basham had a great chance to get on the scoresheet with his first touch in the 47th minute, but his weak shot was easily dealt with. Aberdeen were creating chances but could not take them. Darren Mackie wasted a fine chance in the 52nd minute but his shot from 8 yards out went wildly over the bar, following some fine work from Ben Thornley on the left. Darren Mackie was involved again in the 58th minute, only to be denied by McGlynn following a fine pass from McAllister.

The home keeper was in fine form and denied Roberto Bisconti then Ben Thornley in the 68th minute with a good double stop. He was involved again just three minutes later to deny Darren Mackie. He came to the rescue again in the 83rd minute to keep Kevin McNaughton from adding to the scoreline. Montrose almost pulled a goal back in the 88th minute. Mark Peat was a relieved man as he watched Webster's free kick come crashing back off his left upright. It was the last chance for the home side, and the Dons held on for their second straight pre-season win. The next game for the Dons is the trip to Brechin on Saturday 13th July.
