Young Dons start defense of trophy

The young Dons successfully negotiated the first hurdle in the defence of their Youth Cup Trophy. In an entertaining match the Young Dons defeated a plucky Queen's Park team 4-2 to march into the next round. Watson was the hero with a double while Kidd and Carella scored the other goals.

The game started at a terrific pace and Queen's Park had a couple of shorts on goal from Cunningham and Canning in the opening two minutes. The second brought out a fine save from Hutton. It was the Dons however that took the lead with a well-worked goal in the 3rd minute. Carella beat several players on the right before delivering a precise pass to McKenzie on the left. The youngster then cut the ball back to give Murray Watson the simple task of netting from 3 yards.

Queen's Park were undaunted by the setback and the game settled into an entertaining end-to-end affair. The visitors drew level in the 18th minute when Gemmell hit a fierce 12-yard drive that went in off Hutton's left hand post. The Dons went close to regaining the lead in the 22nd minute when the keeper did well to block a Tarditi header. Murray Watson showed immense skill in the 27th minute in a move similar to Gasgoine's goal against Scotland at Euro 96. Unfortunately his shot hit the base of the post and the danger was cleared.

The home side regained the lead in the 33rd minute when the ball broke to an unmarked Kidd on the edge of the area and the midfielder made no mistake with a crisply hit drive, leaving Queen's Park goalkeeper Devlin with no chance. Aberdeen were enjoying a good spell of pressure and Watson went close twice with his second effort coming back off Devlin's right hand post.

The game continued at the same pace in the second half with Souter going close in the 51st minute with a shot that went inches wide of the target. It was the visitors that equalised though in the 55th minute with a sublime 25 yard shot by substitute Fisher that gave Hutton no chance. The joy was short lived however as Aberdeen regained the lead three minutes later when Watson held off a challenge and drove home from six yards.

Hutton was the hero in the 70th minute when he made a brilliant save from a Gemmell header to keep his side in front. Foster went close for the Dons in the 73rd minute when his fierce shot was cleared from the goal line. Carella sealed the victory in the 90th minute when he converted a McHattie cross.
