Motherwell 1 - 0 Aberdeen

Play was of an even description in the first half, and it was late in the period when Cameron scored what proved to be the only goal of the match. Aberdeen restarted in positive style forcing a succession of corners, but none was converted. Motherwell played strongly, but they were handicapped by an injury to Tennant. Estimated attendance 6000.

Aberdeen's sequence of League successes came to a stop at Motherwell, where the home team obtained the only goal.
Heavy rain before the start and during the game affected the attendance, and there were only 5000 spectators.
On the run of play, Aberdeen were distinctly unfortunate to lose both points, as in the second half at any rate they had much the better of the exchanges, but did not excel at shooting, and it was really their weakness in this department that brought about their downfall.

Defence in Form.

The defence played splendidly throughout, and backed their forwards well, but the latter could not respond as a line, and the absence of height and weight in the inside positions was a serious handicap. Yuill effected several brilliant saves in the first half, notably from Ferrier, Cameron, and Stevenson, but there were two occasions, when out of his goal and he did not got possession, that he was indebted to Livingstone, who twice cleared when below the bar.
Jackson and Livingstone played very steadily, the first-named keeping a firm grip of Ferrier, Motherwell's star winger. McHale was a great power at half-back in defence and attack, and both Black and McLeod were at their best.
Forward, Aberdeen were best served by McDermid and Cheyne, but although the others were clever, they could not make their presence felt at close quarters, and Merrie, who was absent owing to injury, was badly Missed.
Motherwell were handicapped for a considerable period of the game through injury to Tennant, who moved to outside-right in the first half, and Cameron essayed the centre-forward role. The winners were a good all-round team, and were finely served by McClory, Hunter, Little, and Craig in defence with Stevenson and McMurtrie the best of the forwards.

PROGRESS OP PLAY.

Aberdeen made the running at the start, and from Love's centre Cheyne was high with a "first-time" shot. Black, too, tried from long range, but his direction was also at fault. A raid by the Motherwell left saw Stevenson just miss with a great shot, and following this Cheyne had a chance for Aberdeen, but again sent high. Play ruled fast from end to end, and both defences were kept on the stretch. Yuill stopped a fierce volley by Ferrier, and Stevenson just missed the goal with another fast shot. At the other end Love sent inches wide of McClory's charge.
Subsequently Motherwell were on top for a time. Yuill saved brilliantly from McFadyen, and Livingstone, on the goal line, cleared when a goal seemed certain. Following a rush by Love, Yorston swept the ball inches high of the home goal. Later, McDermid scattered the home defence, but Love slipped and failed to gather the left winger's cross. At this stage Tennant, the Motherwell centre-forward, was injured and went to outside right, Cameron leading the attack.

A CHANCE LOST.

Aberdeen lost great chance of taking the lead when Cheyne, having sent the ball against the post, McFarlane ran in to meet the rebound and sent wide of an empty goal.
A free kick by Little was tipped over the bar by Yuil, and subsequently the Aberdeen goalkeeper had to dive to the feet of Cameron. In another Motherwell attack, Yull was beaten, but Livingstone cleared from the goal line.
A minute from the interval Motherwell took the lead. They forced a corner, and the ball was nicely placed by McMurtrie for Cameron to net from close range.
Equality marked the play in the opening stages of the second half, Stevenson at one end and McLeod at the other having shots. A corner kick by McDermid gave McClory trouble, but he got the ball just below the bar. McDermid later dribbled close in, but in attempting to put the ball beyond the home goalkeeper's reach, he shot it against his leg, and Cheyne and McFarlane missed the rebound. Aberdeen afterwards applied strong pressure. McClory fisted away from Black, and Cheyne had several tries that were wrong in direction. The play continued to favour Aberdeen, but although they were clever and nippy in midfield, their light forwards were rather easily brushed aside by the home defenders.
It was only occasionally that the Motherwell wingers broke away, but even when they did they were never really dangerous, and Yuill had little to do. McClory on the other hand was kept busy, and repeatedly had to go to the assistance of his backs. In the closing minutes, McFarlane was injured and had to be assisted off. He was able to resume just as the game was about to finish, and the Motherwell defence managed to stave off the equaliser that was due Aberdeen play.
