Mearns Team's Plucky Display.
Great enthusiasm was aroused in Stonehaven by the visit of Aberdeen for a friendly game with the IocaI junior club last night. A crowd of about 1000 turned out Glenury. Provost Thomson kicked off. Right away the crowd were treated to an exhibition of brilliant passing between Robertson, McDermid, and Mutch. Stonehaven put up a gallant defence, Keith especially playing a fine game, while Anderson was outstanding in the half-line. McKenzie was a constant source of trouble for the Dons' defence, repeatedly carrying the ball with terrific bursts of speed. Play swung quickly from end to end, with the seniors doing their share of the attacking. No sooner had Mutch missed narrowly with Masson out of his charge than Dallas brought Cumming into action with a twenty yards' drive. There were exciting moments in the Stonehaven goalmouth when Warnock crossed a ball which looked like going behind, and a smart Robertson header was blocked by Keith. Warnock was a persistent raider, and after half an hour gave the Dons the lead off a slip from Robertson.Dallas Equalises.
Stonehaven were not discouraged, and almost immediately forced two corners in succession. The second of these was taken by McKenzie, whose cross Dallas headed through to put the teams on level terms. Stonehaven were playing a plucky game, and deserved to be on an equal footing at the interval. Stonehaven did not resume with the vigour they had shown in the first half. After Masson had brought off a couple capital saves. Love again put Aberdeen on the lead from a free kick. Bad luck befell Stonehaven at this stage, when they lost McKenzie, who retired after a collision with Leiper. Lack of stamina told against Stonehaven, and the Dons eased up considerably. Stonehaven fought pluckily with ten men, but the attack now lacked its former fire. Thomson put Aberdeen further ahead near the close.Source: Press & Journal, 25th April 1933
