Smith's Off-day

Following on two home defeats, a 4-2 Premier Reserve League victory over Rangers was doubly welcome for the young Dons - and the circumstances in which it was achieved made the result even more creditable.

Playing the match at Stirling's new Forthbank Stadium, the Aberdeen side had to survive for more than half the game with 10 men after Gary Smith had been sent off for retaliation in a clash with Alexei Mickhailitchenko, who escaped with a booking.
This, and a subsequent injury which necessitated Kenny Gilbert, who had been playing in defence, being replaced by a striker in Colin Milne, resulted in wholesale positional changes, but the young Dons took these handicaps in their stride and finally reaped the reward for a first-class display of skilful football, allied to team spirit.
While still at full strength, Aberdeen had demonstrated their potential by scoring four times in the opening 20 minutes, and this against an experienced Rangers rearguard!
Andy Roddie started the quickfire goal spree, Andy Gibson added two more, and Graeme Ferguson, who went on to complete an outstanding performance, claimed the fourth goal. The Aberdeen reshuffle, started by Smith's 38th-minute dismissal, continued when Roddie gave way to Hugh Robertson at the interval and Milne took over from Gilbert on the hour mark.
Although Rangers reduced the deficit with a David Hagen goal a few minutes into the second half, the young Dons made light of their numerical disadvantage and it was only in the final minute that the Ibrox side gave their defeat a touch of respectability with a second goal, Mickhailitchenko netting a free kick.
