Div 1 (Old)
Falkirk scorers: Ferguson 15, Hickie, Scott (pen) 80
Aberdeen scorers: Hutton 48.

28/02/1920 | KO:

The meeting of Falkirk and Aberdeen was productive of a keen game, in which the home lot were unquestionably the stronger side. Throughout they did most of the pressing, and though they missed some fine opportunities, the two scores which, as the result of the efforts of Ferguson and Hickie, fell to them before the interval were well merited. In the second half they attacked strongly, but later they fell away, and it was at this period that Hutton brought about a reduction of the lead. The Aberdonians for a time wore down the dashing offensive of the home lot, who, however, revived considerably. Scott, from a penalty, increased their lead. All through the game was well contested, and though Falkirk deserved their win, they should have had a larger score to their credit. The attendance was estimated at 6000.

Not since they beat Hamilton Academicals at Pittodrie on January 3, have Aberdeen won a League match. They suffered another reverse on Saturday, when at Brockville Park Falkirk beat them by 3 goals to 1. it was a fast, gruelling game, on a greasy pitch, and the result was quite a fair criterion of the play. Aberdeen, flattered at the outset when the home goal was in difficulties on several occasions, but there was never the same penetrative thrust in their work as marked the play of the Falkirk side. Massie, the Aberdeen left back, was injured, and it was during his temporary absence that McCulloch slipped across a ball for W. Ferguson to head past Anderson after fifteen minutes. Aberdeen retaliated strongly, and the home goalkeeper had daring saves from Hilton and Connon. Subsequent play was slightly in favour of Falkirk, and Anderson saved finely on several occasions. Before the interval Hickie increased the Falkirk lead with a drive from 25 yards' range, and shots by Walker, Ferguson, and Martin were all on the mark. Aberdeen frequently attacked, but could not get to close quarters, and were two goals in arrears at the interval.

The Pittodrie players came away strongly in the second half when the forward line was rearranged. After three minutes, following upon good work by Wylie and Yule, Hutton scored for Aberdeen with a grounder. Subsequently the Pittodrie side made a strong bid for the equaliser, but a strong defence, coupled with their own weak finishing, combined to keep them out. Falkirk attacked strongly at times, and Anderson effected some fine clearances. Ten minutes from the end Falkirk were awarded a penalty kick for Wright bringing down Martin in the box and Scott gave Anderson no chance to save. Falkirk were more virile in attack and defence, and deserved their win. Best for Aberdeen were Anderson, Hannah, Wright, J. Wyllie, Yule, Conon and Hutton; and for Falkirk, Ferguson, Hunter, Townsley, Hickie, Ferguson, Martin, and Walker. The attendance was 5000.
