23/08/1905 | KO:

Aberdeen, with the following team, played Montrose, for the benefit of that club's funds, on Links Park, Montrose, last night - Macfarlane; Murray, Willox; Halkett, G McNicol, H low; Robertson, Henderson, Ward, McAulay, Lennie. Mr. G. Bowman acted as referee.

The was a large attendance. The homesters played throughout in surprising fashion. Aberdeen's play was disappointing. The scoring was opened by Smith, of Dundee Stobswell, a junior centre forward on trial for the Montrose, converting a corner placed finely by Bailie. McHardy added the second soon afterwards, and at the interval Montrose led by 2 goals to 0.

In the second half, while Aberdeen did most of the pressing, Montrose did most of the scoring. Smith scored with a fine low shot after 15 minute's play, to which McAulay replied by gaining Aberdeen's first and only point. Smith again found the net for Montrose. Aberdeen kept up the pressure, but the fine play of the Montrose half-backs, the smart saving of Moir, and the alertness of the backs, kept them from getting another point. Macfarlane kept goal splendidly for his side. Halkett was the best half, but the forwards were ineffective.
