Aberdeen 2 - 1 Partick Thistle

Partick Thistle opened the scoring, Simpson heading past Yuill. Aberdeen replied strongly but unsuccessfully, and the visitors had the better of the exchanges until the interval. The second half went in favour of the home side, who equalised through Love from a penalty kick. A little later Yorston headed through the winning goal for Aberdeen.

Aberdeen continue to present a serious challenge to Rangers for the leadership of the First Division of the Scottish League. On Saturday at Pittodrie, Partick Thistle were beaten by the odd goal in three, Aberdeen thus registering their third successive home victory in eight days. Celtic advanced with a smart victory at Ayr, but Kilmarnock and Hearts unexpectedly dropped a point to Dundee and St Johnstone respectively.

Aberdeen were a trifle fortunate to collect both points from Partick Thistle and a division would have been a much fairer result.
In the first half the Dons were only a shadow of their usual selves, and Partick deserved their interval lead. The home team, however, made a great recovery in the second half and pulled the fat out of the fire.

Back Weakness.

Aberdeen were weak in defence especially at back. Yuill in goal did splendid work, while of the halves. Falloon, who deputised for Black, and Hill, were best. In an attack, which did not carry its usual punch, Yorston and Cheyne were most prominent.
Partick were sound in defence with Jackson, O'Hare, Hunter, and Boardman outstanding. Torbet on the extreme left was always clever and dangerous, while Simpson at centre-forward was a thorn in the side of the home defence.

Run of the Game.

With the advantage of the wind, Aberdeen made the running at the start, and Jackson held a smart oblique drive from Cheyne. Excitement ran high when Love and Falloon sent in dangerous centres, but both were cleared before any damage could be done.
Against the wind Partick Thistle made slow progress, and a long-range effort by Hunter was the nearest approach to danger. Love took play to the other end, where a fruitless corner was obtained. Soon afterwards Cheyne wriggled through, but his shot was off the mark, and later a splendid drive by Hill flew inches high.
Following this, Thistle made ground, and from a corner by Turner, Yuill held a header from Grove. The Dons retaliated vigorously, and after two useless corners Smith shot high over and Love sent past. A nice slip by McDermid gave Hill a chance, and the halfback shot hard and true, but Jackson saved in clever fashion.
At this stage Aberdeen were not having matters all their own way, and this was emphasised when a shot by Ballantyne flashed past. Play quickly swung to the other where Love and Yorston changed places, and Jackson had to save at full length from the winger.

Yuill's Great Save.

A Thistle rally had the Aberdeen goal in danger, and Yuill made a miraculous save from Torbet, with Ballantyne on top of him. For a time Partick held a slight advantage territorially, and ten minutes from the interval Simpson headed home an adroit centre by Torbet. Nettled by this somewhat unexpected, although not exactly undeserved, reverse, the Dons returned to the attack, and after a pile-driver by Cheyne had. struck the upright, Love sent high over.

Narrow Escape.

Things looked ominous when, between them, McLaren and Livingstone messed clearance, but, fortunately, Simpson's effort rolled harmlessly across the goalmouth.
Play was quickly transferred to the other end, where a fast grounder by Falloon was not far off the mark.
Well policed by Boardman, Yorston, Aberdeen's leading marksman, got little chance, and the interval arrived with Partick hanging on to their slender lead.
Immediately on the resumption Aberdeen almost equalised, Jackson saving at full length from McDermid.
A determined counter attack by Partick had the home defence in difficulties, and Simpson might have made more use of one chance given him Then came a splendid Aberdeen rally. Falloon gathered the ball well upfield and slung in a terrific shot which Jackson could only push down, but before any of the Dons' forwards could get to the ball, it was scrambled clear. The Dons were not to be denied, and Jackson showed his ability when he punched away a lightning drive by Love.
The winger immediately after shot narrowly over.

Penalty Goal.

In a Thistle break away, Yuill held a hard shot from Simpson. Back swung play to the other end where McDermid, in allowing a pass from Yorston to between his legs to Smith, missed a golden opportunity.
Partick once more made progress, and Yuill made a grand lull length save from Torbet. At the other end Jackson saved at the foot of the post from Yorston.
Alter about half an hour's play Simpson netted for the Thistle but was adjudged offside. Soon afterwards Rae, the Thistle left-back, brought the ball down with his arm in the penalty area, and from the spot kick Love equalised.
Stimulated by this success the Dons attacked with renewed vigour, and from a Smith pass Cheyne headed against the keeper.
Jackson saved at the foot the post from Yorston at the expense of corner, and from the flag kick taken by Cheyne, the Dons' diminutive centre headed into the corner of the net.
There was no holding the homesters after this, and the Thistle defence was over-run. Jackson saved from Falloon, and the next moment a characteristic snap shot by Yorston flashed past the wrong side of the post.

Keen Finish.

following a useless raid by the visitors. Love broke away on the right, and Jackson had to jump high to disperse of his centre. McDermid gave Cheyne a chance, but the Dons' international swept the ball past, and immediately after, Jackson held a fast drive from Hill.
With defeat staring them in the face, Partick became imbued with a fresh lease of life, and Yuill did well to stop a great shot by Torbet. Play soon once more centred found the Thistle citadel, and from a Smith cross. Love missed by inches. There were 14,000 spectators.
