Benefit Match
Benefit for Frank Barrett
Aberdeen scorers: Ford 20.

03/10/1906 | KO:

A benefit football much in aid of Frank Barrett, the ex-Aberdeen and Dundee goalkeeper, was played yesterday afternoon at Pittodrie, between teams representing Aberdeen and a select Aberdeen Wednesday League team. There was a poor attendance when the teams lined up as follows under discharge of Mr. Peter Simpson, Aberdeen's trainer:- League Select: Norrie; Bremner, Bruce; Cassie, Burnett, Smith; Christie, Henderson, Mackie, Gordon, Smith. Aberdeen: Macfarlane; Boyle, Gault; W. Low, Strang, Ward; McLean, McColl, Ford, McIntyre, Lawrie.

The opening stages were entirely in favour of Aberdeen. Play was very slow and uninteresting. The players would not exert themselves. Aberdeen had all the game, and after 20 minutes' play Ford scored for Aberdeen. Aberdeen's forward line gave a very poor display. The Select goalkeeper gave a very good exhibition. The spectators got plenty of amusement, as the game was of a very laughable nature.

The second half opened briskly, and Norrie had to deal with several hard shots. McIntyre was the only Aberdeen forward who played it all well. Aberdeen were granted a penalty, but Gault, who took the kick, sent behind. The juniors did exceedingly well, considering the experienced half-backs and backs they had to contend with. Aberdeen did all the pressing, but their forwards were very weak in front of goal. Towards the close of the game the select team tried hard to equalise, but Boyle and Gault were never beat. Macfarlane only handled four times during the whole of the second half, while the juniors have to fete Norrie for saving them from an overwhelming defeat.
